Hillenburg studied at the Marine Institute (now known as the Ocean Institite) in Orange County. Hillenburg was approacged by an educational director to write a comic based off marine life. The comic bool starred a character named Bob the Sponge, who would later evolve into SpongeBob SquarePants. After this Hillenburg decided to pursue animation. After making some short films, Hillenburg landed a job as director for Rocko's Modern Life. After being suggested by a crew member during the final season of Rocko's Modern Life, Hillenburg began to come up with ideas for a new show. He eventually decided to make it with characters living underwater. Hillenburg had turned to Tom Kenny to be the voice for the main character.
